What’s a Sparkler Exit- and Should You Have One?

Imagine this: it’s the end of your wedding day. The music is pumping, your feet are sore from hours of dancing, but the night isn’t over yet. Instead of quietly slipping away, you’re stepping out into a tunnel of glowing lights, surrounded by your favourite people. That’s the magic of a sparkler exit—simple, stunning, and unforgettable.

So, What Exactly Is a Sparkler Exit?

A sparkler exit is exactly what it sounds like: a send-off where your guests hold lit sparklers, creating a path of twinkling light as you make your grand exit. The best part? It doesn’t need a huge budget or a lot of planning to pull off. All you need are sparklers, your guests, and a little coordination. I recommend purchasing the extra-long sparklers… this means more time to have fun and more photos!

How to Plan a Sparkler Exit

If you’re thinking about adding a sparkler exit to your wedding, here’s what you need to know:

  1. Timing Is Key
If you’d like this moment captured by your photographer or videographer I recommend staging it before they leave. They’ve done this before and will give the guests the lowdown on how a sparkler exit works. Otherwise, plan it at the end of the night and make it your official exit.

  1. Get the Right Sparklers
Go for long-lasting sparklers. They burn longer, giving you enough time to walk through without feeling rushed.

  2. Keep It Safe
Safety matters! Have a designated area for the sparkler exit, with buckets of water or sand for disposal. Assign someone—maybe your planner, photographer or a friend—to organise guests and make sure everything runs smoothly.

My Tips for the Perfect Sparkler Exit

From behind the lens, the sparkler exits are intense, crazy, and so much fun. Who’s idea was it to get all your drunk/slightly tipsy guests to wave fire in the air and around your face? To keep it safe, they require a little prep. Here’s how to get the most out of your moment:

  • Walk slowly or bring the energy: Take your time and enjoy the moment. Otherwise, up the energy and run up and down that aisle of sparklers. Do what feels good for you!

  • Pause in the middle: A quick pause for a kiss, spin or being a silly goofball adds so much to the photo.

  • Trust your photographer: We know how to balance the light from the sparklers and capture the mood just right. Communication ahead of time is key, so we’re ready when the magic happens.

One of my favourite sparkler exits was at a Townsville wedding where the couple walked through a tunnel of their cheering friends. They paused halfway for a quick kiss, and the shot ended up being one of their favourites from the entire day.
