Top 4 Places To Elope In Australia

The popularity of elopements began to grow during the outbreak of COVID-19. There was a shift in normalising the idea of intimate ceremonies, and couples discovered they preferred the simplicity and emotional focus of a small event. This trend continues today in 2025, with the cost-of-living crisis affecting most of the population and causing financial strain when hosting larger weddings. An elopement offers a more budget-friendly alternative while still allowing couples to create a meaningful, personal experience without compromising on quality.

Eloping can be rebellious and exciting. I’ve had couples travel to beautiful destinations, have their ceremony, and keep the whole adventure a secret from family and friends. Imagine tying the knot in an incredible location, just the two of you, and then surprising everyone at your engagement party with your wedding photos. It’s a thrilling and unconventional way to celebrate your love and it makes for an unforgettable story!

The beauty of eloping is that there’s no right or wrong way to do it. Choose a destination, craft a meaningful day (like waking up and having a coffee together, savouring the simple things in life) and celebrate with just the two of you!

Here are my Top 4 Elopement Destinations I’ve visited in Australia…

1) Mt Mulligan Lodge

A one-hour helicopter flight from Cairns Airport will take you to the luxurious Mt Mulligan Lodge. The first thing you'll notice is the imposing presence of Mt Mulligan, towering over the lodge, which is nestled among the eucalypts on the banks of the weir. The lodge offers an authentic outback experience for up to 28 guests.

Why it’s special: Nestled in the heart of Queensland, Mt Mulligan is perfect for couples who want a remote and luxurious experience. Surrounded by rugged mountains, it boasts breathtaking landscapes that create the ultimate backdrop for your vows. Think golden sunsets, wide-open skies, and serene seclusion.

What to know: This exclusive location offers on-site accommodation, so you can stay, celebrate, and relax without leaving the property. With its rich cultural history and natural beauty, Mt Mulligan is ideal for those wanting a connection to Australia’s outback spirit. The property is accessible from Cairns via either helicopter or 4WD adventure.

2) Broome

Broome offers an epic backdrop that’s hard to match anywhere else in Australia. Picture a rugged landscape of red desert sands alongside a pristine coastline with clear blue waters. Its tropical climate makes it a year-round elopement hotspot, and with its laid-back vibes, it’s the perfect escape for an intimate celebration. My top accommodation recommendation is The Billi. Located near Cable Beach, it’s the ideal private retreat, where you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a tropical oasis nestled in the heart of the desert.

Why it’s special: Known for its iconic Cable Beach and red desert sands, Broome is a breathtaking mix of outback and ocean. This unique location is perfect for couples who crave an adventurous yet serene setting.

What to know: Whether you’re exchanging vows at sunset on the beach or riding camels along the shore, Broome is an unforgettable destination. The warm, tropical climate makes it a year-round favourite for elopements. Just be sure to plan around the wet season for clear skies!

3) Port Douglas

There was a small chance I’d leave my old stomping grounds of Port Douglas as a top spot for elopements. Most of the couples I photograph here come from larger cities like Sydney or Melbourne, and I can see why. Port Douglas offers the perfect escape to disconnect from the hustle, unwind under the palm trees, and indulge in an impressive selection of high-end food. If you love food… Port Douglas restaurants have got you covered.

Whether you choose to say your vows on a pristine beach, at St Mary’s Church, or even on a private boat out on the reef, Port Douglas offers countless options. The laid-back atmosphere, combined with luxurious resorts and intimate venues, creates the perfect escape. This is what Far North Queensland is all about… stress-free weddings.

Why it’s special: Port Douglas combines tropical luxury with a laid-back atmosphere. Surrounded by the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest, this location is perfect for couples who want to make their elopement into an extended holiday.

What to know: The best months to elope in Port Douglas are between April and October. Keep in mind that any other month falls within the monsoon season, which brings humidity and the chance of heavy rainfall.

4) Magnetic Island

The hidden gem in this top 4 list has got to be Magnetic Island. It’s a local hangout for the residents of Townsville because it offers stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and laid-back island vibes. Just a short ferry ride from Townsville, Magnetic Island provides 23 bays and beaches, kilometres of bushland hikes, and the largest colony of koalas in Northern Australia!

Why it’s special: Just off the coast of Townsville, Magnetic Island offers stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and a relaxed island vibe. It’s a short 20-minute ferry ride away but feels like a secluded paradise.

What to know: With over 23 beaches and bays, you’ll be spoiled for choice when picking a spot for your ceremony. There are plenty of charming accommodations for you to enjoy. I recommend checking out Lotus House located at Horseshoe Bay.
